Building Science 101
A building is much more than four walls and a roof. It is a collection of interdependent sub-systems that each must perform their own task and work together with the other systems in harmony. Each individual sub-system influences the performance of the entire building and based on how these systems work together we can predict over all building performance with great accuracy. Building science is the study of how buildings function and how these building systems interact with each other to perform in the environment around them. The ultimate goal of building science is to achieve building sustainability.
Building sustainability means to provide a safe, healthy, comfortable energy efficient indoor environment while simultaneously limiting the impact on the Earth's natural resources. The objective is to achieve optimum, ongoing results with minimal cost and environmental impact. But before we can assess how best to go about this process, we must first understand building basics.
